श्रावणी मेला सनातन धर्म का सबसे अद्वितीय एवं विहंगम तीर्थ उत्सव है। प्रतिवर्ष श्रावण मास (जुलाई-अगस्त) में 50 लाख से अधिक शिवभक्त (कांवड़िए) केसरिया वस्त्र धारण कर बिहार के सुलतानगंज में उत्तरवाहिनी गंगा से पवित्र जल भरते हैं और 105 किलोमीटर की कठिन पदयात्रा कर देवघर में बाबा बैद्यनाथ पर जलाभिषेक करते हैं।Shravani Mela is Sanatana Dharma’s grandest annual pilgrimage. During the holy month of Shravan (July–August), over 5 million saffron-clad Kanwariyas collect holy Uttarvahini Ganga Jal at Sultanganj (Bihar) and trek 105 kilometers barefoot across rugged terrain to offer sacred water to Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga.
धार्मिक व पौराणिक महत्वSpiritual & Scriptural Significance
पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार समुद्र मंथन के समय जब कालकूट हलाहल विष निकला, तो संसार की रक्षा हेतु महादेव ने उसे अपने कंठ में धारण कर लिया। विष की दाहक ज्वाला को शांत करने हेतु देवताओं ने उन पर गंगाजल की अविरल धारा अर्पित की थी। उसी दैवीय स्मृति में भक्तगण सावन में सुलतानगंज का पवित्र गंगाजल लाकर मनोकामना लिंग पर अर्पित करते हैं।According to the Puranas, when the virulent cosmic venom Halahala emerged during the Churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan), Lord Shiva held it in his throat to save creation, turning his throat blue (Neelkantha). To soothe the scorching agony of the poison, the Devas poured streams of holy Ganga water upon him. In perpetual reverence, devotees pour cooling Ganga Jal on the Kamna Linga throughout Shravan.
श्रावणी मेले के दौरान पूरे 105 किमी लंबे कांवड़िया पथ को बारीक बालू (रेत) से ढक दिया जाता है ताकि नंगे पांव चलने वाले करोड़ों भक्तों के पैरों में छाले न पड़ें। संपूर्ण मार्ग में जल छिड़काव, रोशनी और भजन-कीर्तन का निरंतर प्रवाह रहता है।
सामान्य कांवड़िए यह दूरी 3 से 4 दिनों में तय करते हैं, जबकि "डाक बम" बिना रुके, बिना बैठे और बिना सोए लगातार दौड़ते हुए 24 घंटे के भीतर देवघर पहुंचकर सीधे गर्भगृह में जल अर्पण करते हैं।
Throughout Shravani Mela, the entire 105 km pilgrimage highway is surfaced with fine soft sand and misting stations to prevent blistering of pilgrims walking barefoot under the monsoon sun and humidity.
While ordinary Kanwariyas complete the journey over 3 to 4 days staying at resting camps, extraordinary "Dak Bam" devotees sprint the entire 105 km stretch continuously within 24 hours without sitting, resting, or setting down their holy load.

कांवड़ यात्रा के नियम एवं प्रमुख चरणSacred Vows & Key Pilgrimage Stages
1. सुलतानगंज उत्तरवाहिनी गंगा संकल्प
सुलतानगंज में गंगा उत्तर की ओर मुड़ती हैं (उत्तरवाहिनी)। यहां अजगैबीनाथ महादेव का पूजन कर कांवड़ में जल भरकर पवित्र संकल्प लिया जाता है।
2. कांवड़ की शुचिता (भूमि स्पर्श निषेध)
यात्रा के दौरान कांवड़ को कभी भी सीधे जमीन पर नहीं रखा जाता। विश्राम हेतु मार्ग में बने विशेष स्टैंड (कांवड़ स्टैंड) का उपयोग किया जाता है।
3. बोल-बम का तारक मंत्र
मार्ग में सभी यात्री एक-दूसरे को "बम" कहकर संबोधित करते हैं। "बोल बम का नारा है, बाबा एक सहारा है" की गूंज से मार्ग का हर कष्ट विलीन हो जाता है।
4. बासुकीनाथ धाम में हाजिरी
मान्यता है कि देवघर में बाबा बैद्यनाथ (दीवानी कचहरी) में अर्जी लगाने के बाद बासुकीनाथ (फौजदारी कचहरी) में हाजिरी देने पर ही यात्रा पूर्ण मानी जाती है।
1. Sultanganj Uttarvahini Ganga Sankalp
At Sultanganj, the sacred Ganges flows northward. Pilgrims pray at Ajgaibinath rock temple, fill sealed vessels with holy water, and take vows.
2. Sacred Sanctity of the Kanwar
The Kanwar must never touch the soil directly. Specially erected elevated wooden stands are used whenever pilgrims stop to hydrate or rest.
3. The Divine "Bol Bam" Chanting
Every pilgrim addresses fellow travelers as "Bam". The unceasing cosmic chant of "Bol Bam" fills the air and energizes weary walkers.
4. Attendance at Baba Basukinath
Pilgrimage custom mandates visiting Baba Basukinath (45 km away) after Deoghar; Baidyanath is the civil court while Basukinath is the executive court.
