श्रावण मास (जुलाई-अगस्त) में देवघर में आयोजित होने वाला ‘श्रावणी मेला’ मानव इतिहास के सबसे विशाल और अनवरत चलने वाले धार्मिक मेलों में गिना जाता है। संपूर्ण माह में 50 लाख से अधिक श्रद्धालु केसरिया वस्त्र धारण कर, नंगे पांव 105 किलोमीटर की कठिन पदयात्रा कर बाबा के दरबार में जलार्पण करने पहुंचते हैं।
सुलतानगंज से जल संकल्प: उत्तरवाहिनी गंगा
कांवड़ यात्रा का आरंभ बिहार के भागलपुर जिले में स्थित सुलतानगंज से होता है। यहाँ गंगा नदी दक्षिण से उत्तर की ओर (उत्तरवाहिनी) मुड़ती है। हिंदू धर्म में उत्तरवाहिनी गंगा को अत्यंत पवित्र माना गया है क्योंकि वह अपने उद्गम कैलाश की ओर अग्रसर प्रतीत होती है।
सुलतानगंज में स्थित बाबा अजगैबीनाथ (जल में स्थित पाषाण मंदिर) के दर्शन और गंगा पूजन के पश्चात तीर्थयात्री संकल्प लेते हैं और अपनी कांवड़ में पवित्र गंगाजल भरकर कंधे पर उठाते हैं।
105 किलोमीटर की कठिन तपस्या और नियम
सुलतानगंज से देवघर तक का 105 किमी का मार्ग केवल एक शारीरिक यात्रा नहीं, बल्कि अहंकार और वासनाओं को भस्म करने वाली आध्यात्मिक अग्निपरीक्षा है:
- कांवड़ भूमि पर न रखना: संकल्प लेने के पश्चात कांवड़ को कभी भी सीधे जमीन पर नहीं रखा जाता। विश्राम के समय कांवड़ को विशेष रूप से बनाए गए कांवड़-स्टैंड अथवा वृक्षों पर टांगा जाता है।

- डाक बम की कठिनतम साधना: साधारण कांवड़िया 3 से 4 दिनों में यह यात्रा पूरी करते हैं, जबकि ‘डाक बम’ बिना रुके, बिना बैठे 24 घंटे के भीतर 105 किलोमीटर की दूरी लगातार दौड़ते हुए पूरी करते हैं।
देवघर जलार्पण और बासुकीनाथ दर्शन की अनिवार्यता
105 किमी चलकर देवघर पहुंचने पर जब कांवड़िया बाबा बैद्यनाथ के पावन ज्योतिर्लिंग पर गंगाजल अर्पित करता है, तो उसकी संपूर्ण थकान आनंद और अश्रुपूरित भक्ति में परिवर्तित हो जाती है।
पौराणिक मान्यता है कि देवघर में बाबा बैद्यनाथ के दर्शन के पश्चात 42 किमी दूर बाबा बासुकीनाथ धाम के दर्शन करना अनिवार्य है। माना जाता है कि बाबा बैद्यनाथ दीवानी न्यायालय (सच्चा दरबार) हैं और बासुकीनाथ फौजदारी न्यायालय हैं। बासुकीनाथ में पूजा किए बिना कांवड़ यात्रा का फल अधूरा माना जाता है।
